HISTORY OF FAMILY FROM TAPE BY ALMA BETTS - Info. from Ilene Lyons.
Richard Samuel Betts was a wonderful man. He stood about 5'7", had gra yish
hair & brownish grey eyes. His build was stocky.
Richard Samuel drove an ox team across the plains to pay the costs of t he
trip. Once he rested his feet on the cart and got in trouble. His mothe r was
an invalid and had to ride the whole way.
Two of his brothers crossed the plains later and his Mother was able to
visualize their travel and different points in their travel.
The family first settled in Salt Lake City and established a little wor k
shop. Richard Samuel liked to smoke and often used his spending money to
purchase the makings. One day he decided to quit smoking so he could b y things
for his mother; he put it away on the shelf and never smoked again.
When their daughter Laura, age 2, was playing at the springs or well sh e fell
in. Her father, Richard Samuel, got her out and worked on her until sh e lived
as her mother stood looking on wringing her hands.
Sarah Jane was due to deliver her last child. Richard Samuel claimed t hat
the Doctor was drunk and operated killing the mother and child. He was v ery
bitter about it the rest of his life.
Elizabeth died of Scarlet Fever. Someone else knew about it before wor d ofit arrived the next morning. She also knew who would be bringing the
information.
Richard would go out selling honey which left the children at home alon e
weeks at a time.
Fearing to leave the children home alone so much he decided to re-marry . The
new wife was a girl only 3 years older than his oldest child, Liza. He r name
was Julia Ann Hales and they were married in the St. George temple.
Richard Samuel Jr. died from eating poison parsnips. The boys had los t the
cows and so were sent to bed without supper. The next morning they wer e sent
out to find the cows without breakfast. Richard Samuel Jr. was so hungr y that
he ate wild parsnips but told his brothers not to eat as they were poison . He
died in great agony, cursing his stepmother to the end. This pried on hi s
stepmother's mind ever after.
Liza married before the family moved the Canada.
When the family started for Canada, the cattle were shipped by train an d
Richard Samuel went with them. They established a farm near Coutts. Ric hard
also went into Raymond and helped make bricks.
Richard Samuel Betts died while Alma was herding sheep. Alma came in t o
clean up and went to his father but he was already dead. He died in Ma y of
Diabetes. The place they were living in had no door but only quilts hang ing
where doors would be. He lived in quite a state of poverty. They shippe d his
body to Raymond and the family also came back to United States for the fu neral.
Julie Ann had cattle after Richard Samuel died.
Ilene Lyons recalls being in school with Richard Samuel's 2 younger dau ghters
when she was age 14. Bro. Anderson's wife made Ilene's mother's weddin g dress
so we got her birth certificate thru him.
Parts of this may be inacurate as it was taken from the memory of Ilen e and
that combined with my note taking could result in errors.

James was the last of 11 children. James' father was an iron maker an d it is said that he was knighted for making the first springs in the Que en's carriage.
When the missionaries visited the family, they soon became converted a nd all who were old enough were baptized. James was baptized 10 years lat er by his brother, William in St. Louis.
In 1848 his father was sent to Springfield, Illinois, to work. It too k two years before he was able to send for his family. He died in St. Lou is, but his wife bravely gathered the necessary equipment. In 1862 the y traveled to the Valley. Twice James returned to the Missouri River to h elp the Mormon immigrants to Utah.
After his marriage, James and his brother, John, leased a shingle an d saw mill. James was in charge of making the shingles while John wa s a wood finisher and painter.
James was a quiet and religious man. He enjoyed taking part in the pla ys and entertainment of the ward. He served as Marshal for two years. H e wasn't interested in farming but loved horticulture. He grew and sold p lants. They had only one cow for the family's use.
James and his brother-in-law were killed in a snowslide while cuttin g ties for the railroad.

Elizabeth (known as Eliza) was born Dec 21, 1801, in England. At age 2 0 she married Peter Betts, living near London most of their married life.
They moved the Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, where they were taught t he gospel of Jesus Christe of Latter Day Saints and were baptized on Ju l 26 1847.
In 1848, Peter was sent to Springfield, Illinois, as an expert sprin g maker, where he worked and saved to bring his family to America. On Oct . 2, 1850, Eliza, with 7 of her children and 2 daughters-in-law, sailed f rom England, to New Orleans, on the ship "James Pennell". Peter met the m at St. Louis, Missouri, but he was a very discouraged and sick man wh o had lost his job because the factory had closed. The family found wor k and established a home near St.Louis; however Peter's health did not im prove and he died and was buried in St.Louis, in 1853. His hope of goin g to Utah was never fulfilled.
Nine years later, Eliza and her 3 youngest sons, joined the James Ware ham's Ox Train, to Utah. Her 2 oldest sons returned to England to receive d further training in the spring making businss, and later settled in Sa n Francisco, forming the Betts Spring Company. Her 2 daughters married an d stayed in St. Louis.
Eliza, and her 2 sons left in Jun 1862, walking most of the way, but d id not have to carry their supplies. She had one cow and the milk that wa s left after their meals was placed in a container and by night they woul d have butter. On the way, one of the oxen died so her cow had to take it s place.
After arriving in Salt Lake, Sept 26, 1862, she settled in Payson, Uta h co., Utah, where she lived the remainder of her life.

*NOTE - The story I have heard is that Peter Betts had joined the churc h in
England and wished to emmigrate. He was a Blacksmith/Spring Maker so whe n word
came that there was an opening for a blacksmith in St. Louis he immediate ly
left for the U.S.A. When he arrived there it was only to find that the j ob had
already been filled. His son William Michael and wife were the next to c ome
over. William Michael & wife then went back to England to pick up his Mo ther,
brothers & sisters and bring them to the new land. When the family finall y got
here there was still a part of their family left behing in Sheffield,York shire
- namely the eldest girl, Eliza with her husband and family. The famil y went
on west with the 2 eldest boys going on to San Francisco where they start ed the
Betts Iron Works. In order to establish this buisness these 2 boys wen t back
again to England for more training in the Iron Making business. This ma y have
been when they finally persuaded Eliza and family to come back with the m to the
United States.

**NOTE - for emigration information look at the notes under William Micha el
Betts.

My father's parents, the Peter Betts family, were converted to the L .D.S. Church in England and arrived in the United States in 1850. He die d in New Orleans one year after his arrival. The family moved to St. Loui s, Missouri where the older sister and brother lived. The boys, Richard , James and John, together with their mother, started for Utah. In Wyomin g, John, my father, joined a return wagon train, while the others continu ed. They settled in Payson, Utah. John worked with wagon trains carryin g supplies all along the Mississippi River and into Mexico. One year late r he returned to St. Louis, Missouri, where he finished learning his trad e as wood finisher, painter, graining and paper hanging. He returned to P ayson when his mother died in 1868.
My grandfather, Peter Betts, was a carriage maker and had a shop nea r London. He was commissioned by the King, I believe Queen Victoria's fat her, to build a carriage for the Queen, who was not very strong. Peter Be tts invented a spring for the carriage. The King was so delighted that h e Knighted him. There is a Coat of Arms in the Tower of London. His son , Richard Betts, received permission to photograph it and I have the orig inal photograph that was brought back from London. I understand that ther e is also a copy in the archives, but I have never seen it.
William N. Betts, the eldest son, returned to England and worked i n the shop with his father. His father taught him to make the springs. Wi lliam returned to the United States during the Civil War. I don't know i f the spring was ever patented, but William and his brother Peter had a s hop in St. Louis and started making springs for carriages, wagons and fo r the first railroad cars that carried them. They sold out in St. Louis a nd went around the horn to San Francisco, California. Peter wanted to far m and went south and had a farm where the city of Long Beach, Californi a now stands.
William built a factory in San Francisco and manufactured springs fo r railroad cars. He tried to get as many relatives as would come to lear n the trade. Among them were two boys named Porter, and two nephews by th e name of Wild. They worked with him until the earthquake and fire of Apr il, 1905. He was considered a multi-millionaire at the time, but was wipe d out. The factory was situated on the corner of Market and Fremont Stree ts. Almost one half of the factory and sidewalk sank 15 feet. He died o f a heart attack.
His son, Percy, and other relatives, saved as much of the machiner y as they could and built a small factory on Fremont Street. It has bee n enlarged many times. I visited it the last time I was in San Francisco . I didn't know I had so many relatives on the West coast. It is known a s The Betts Spring Company.
