      In 1878 David Powell & brother-in-law, James Betts, were killed in a snow slide
      in Payson Canyon. James' body was found that day but David's was not fou nd
      until 1 week later when Soren P. Christensen of Salem dreamed that David' s
      deceased father was pointing to the place he lay. They found it the nex t day
      after exploring the spot and digging several feet.

      Married 3 Apr 1867 in Payson, Utah to Margaret Powell b.12 Mar 1848 Llano ver, Wales, d.23 Feb 1925 Payson.
      James was the last of 11 children. James' father was an iron maker an d it is said that he was knighted for making the first springs in the Que en's carriage.
      When the missionaries visited the family, they soon became converted a nd all who were old enough were baptized. James was baptized 10 years lat er by his brother, William in St. Louis.
      In 1848 his father was sent to Springfield, Illinois, to work. It too k two years before he was able to send for his family. He died in St. Lou is, but his wife bravely gathered the necessary equipment. In 1862 the y traveled to the Valley. Twice James returned to the Missouri River to h elp the Mormon immigrants to Utah.
      After his marriage, James and his brother, John, leased a shingle an d saw mill. James was in charge of making the shingles while John wa s a wood finisher and painter.
      James was a quiet and religious man. He enjoyed taking part in the pla ys and entertainment of the ward. He served as Marshal for two years. H e wasn't interested in farming but loved horticulture. He grew and sold p lants. They had only one cow for the family's use.
      James and his brother-in-law were killed in a snowslide while cuttin g ties for the railroad.
