Elizabeth (known as Eliza) was born Dec 21, 1801, in England. At age 2 0 she married Peter Betts, living near London most of their married life.
They moved the Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, where they were taught t he gospel of Jesus Christe of Latter Day Saints and were baptized on Ju l 26 1847.
In 1848, Peter was sent to Springfield, Illinois, as an expert sprin g maker, where he worked and saved to bring his family to America. On Oct . 2, 1850, Eliza, with 7 of her children and 2 daughters-in-law, sailed f rom England, to New Orleans, on the ship "James Pennell". Peter met the m at St. Louis, Missouri, but he was a very discouraged and sick man wh o had lost his job because the factory had closed. The family found wor k and established a home near St.Louis; however Peter's health did not im prove and he died and was buried in St.Louis, in 1853. His hope of goin g to Utah was never fulfilled.
Nine years later, Eliza and her 3 youngest sons, joined the James Ware ham's Ox Train, to Utah. Her 2 oldest sons returned to England to receive d further training in the spring making businss, and later settled in Sa n Francisco, forming the Betts Spring Company. Her 2 daughters married an d stayed in St. Louis.
Eliza, and her 2 sons left in Jun 1862, walking most of the way, but d id not have to carry their supplies. She had one cow and the milk that wa s left after their meals was placed in a container and by night they woul d have butter. On the way, one of the oxen died so her cow had to take it s place.
After arriving in Salt Lake, Sept 26, 1862, she settled in Payson, Uta h co., Utah, where she lived the remainder of her life.
