From Willard Call - Oct 2, 2013
I found this in Anson’s journal. I have copied most of what it says about Josiah. It does not mention any daughter by the name of “Melvina”. Only one son is mentioned but not by name. Note that one of Josiah’s wives was later married to Anson for time only. There must have been a close connection with both families. I know this info is not all you wanted. I don't have more info at this time. Best Regards. Willard Call

------------------

The Life and Record of Anson Call
Commenced in 1839

I was born in the year 1810, May 13th, State of Vermont, Franklin County, Town Fletcher, son of Cyril and Sally Tiffany Call. Cyril was the son of Joseph. Joseph was the son of John. Cyril born Woodstock, Windsor Co., Vermont, June 29, 1785. Joseph was born Oxford, Worcester Co., Mass., 1745. My mother was the daughter of Christopher Tiffany who emigrated from Germany.

My parents were born in the State of Vermont. My father removed to the State of Ohio when I was seven years of age, Geauga County. I was sent to school in early life, but after removing to Ohio there were but little opportunities for schools owing to the newness of the country. My father’s family including myself suffered much from sickness. We came to reduced circumstances in consequence. My father raised a large family of children.

The eldest was Harvey, Anson, Salmon, died at 1 ½ year old, Samantha, Fanny, Lucina, Josiah, Mary, Sonora Rosaline, Sarah, Mallissa, Omer, Homer.

I recieved a visit from my brother Josiah from Fillmore the first of October.

He was murdered by the Indians near Chicking Crick on his return.

I coppy from the Nuse:

Two men found murdered, supposed to be by Indians. A report has reached here wich we think is reliable, that on friday last, the 15th inst, the remainds of Josiah Call and Samuel Brown, both of Fillmore City, were found in a state of decompsition near Chicken Creek bridge about 20 miles south of Nephi. They had recieved several bullet shots in their bodes. Their throats were cut in a frightful maner, were rudely scalped, and robed of part of their clothing. The cause is unknown, and is the more singular as the persons murdered were known favorably to the Indians in that vicinity for their kindness to them. It is suposed to have been comitted on the 7th instant.

The late Indian massacere. Fillmore City, October 18th, 1858, Editor: Deseret Newse. Thinking you would like to hear the facts concerning the massacre of brother Josiah Call and Samuel Brown betwene Salt Creek and Fillmore, I take the liberty to write them to you as they appeard in evidence before the coroner inquest held over the bodies yesterday. They left Saltcreek on Tuesday, 5th ult, with two days provisions, saying they were going down Chicking Creek to see if a drove of cattle could be taken that that way in to this vally. Some brethren came in from Salt Creek the Saturday folowling hearing that brs Call and Brown had not arived, and told what they heard at Salt Creek.

On Monday four men started in search and found by their horses tracks that they had taken down the north side of Chicken Creek, alsow found where they got off and led their horses to water which satisfide them that they had gone that way. It was some what dificult tracking them, as to all appearance, a large party of Indians close by.

On Friday last, some fifteen started again to renew their search. They met br Shepard at Cedar Springs who had just come in from the north. He told them that he saw a dead body about two miles south of Chicken Creek. Acordingly they proceeded forthwith to the place and found both the bodies within about two hundred yards of each other.

Br Brown was shot through the hart, scalped, and his throat cut. The birds had eaton the flesh from br Calls bones with the exception of his legs below knee and his left arm, but it was evident he had been shot three times, once through the right brest, the ball lodging in the back bone, once through the left ancle, and once through the head, the ball entering the back part of the skull near the seam and coming out the left side of the nose. It is supposed his throat was also cut as the blood had run from where his neck lay, and his right arm was entirely gone and was not found.

They were both striped of atl their clothing exept their under clothes, shoes, and stockings. The remains were this day intered in the cemetery of this place, the ocasion being one of the most solomn I ever witnessed. This is the first instance of the kind that has happened to any citizens of this place since its settlement.

Report says some Indians went to San Peet and they had killed two white men down the Sevier, and that they fought like bars and kild one Indian, that they (the Indians) had to run into the kanyon, but they got more help and followed and killed them them wish may be true, as they had evidently bin down the creek, and here being found on the road home, they would not have come back on to the road again if they had not been molested, or mistrusted some danger.

Yours truly,
T.R. King

In November, went to Fillmore to see to the family of my Murdred Brother.

I found them and friend in great lemontation. His family Concists of 2 Wives and 7 Children, all dependant, and but little means left to do it with. I settled up his business, paid all his deabts, and a few hundred left, And left them with the promis to return in the spring and move the family at my place in Davis Co., the distance of 160 miles.

HISTORY OF SCANDINAVIAN MISSION pg 183
557 Saints left Copenhagen by the steamer "AURORA", May 4, 1865 accompa nied by Anders W. Winberg (who was returning to his home in Utah) & Joha n Swenson. Pres Carl Winderborg went with the emigrants to Hamburg. The c ompany arrived at Kiel the next afternoon (May 5). In the afternoon the j ourney was continues by train to Altona, whence the emigrants went up th e Elbe on a small steamboat to a place off Hamburg, where the company wa s at once placed on board the double-decked ship "B.S. Kimball", an Ameri can vessel. (Capt. Dearborn). On their arrival in Altona, the company wa s met by Pres. Daniels H. Wells & Elder George Reynolds from England, wh o were both present when the company boarded the vessel. On Sunday, the 7 th, a meeting was held on deck, on which occasion Pres. Wells dedicated t he ship with its captain, crew & passengers to the Lord and gave instruct ions and admonition to the Saints. Elder Anders W. Winberg was appointe d leader of the company with Johan Swenson & Hans C. Hogsted as his couns elors. The ship was divided into 8 districts, each with a president. Amon g the emigrants were the following Elders who had acted as presidents o f conferences in Scandinavia: Hans C. Hogsted from the Copenhagen, Sore n Jensen from the Aalborg, Gustaf Pegan from the Fredericia, P.O. Holmgre n from the Stockholm, John C. Sandberg from the Goteborg, & Swen Nilsso n from the Skaane Conferences. Among a number of other elders who had lab ored as missionaries in Scandinavia & who as emigrants crossed the ocea n in the "B S Kimball" was the late Martin Lundwall.
On Monday, May 8, about noon, the ship lifted anchor & was drawn by a t ender down the Gluckstadt, where Pres. Carl Widerborg & Elders Samuel L . Sprague & Goe. M. Brown (who had accompanied the emigrants from Copenha gen), took leave of the emigrants and returned to Copenhagen, accompanie d by Pres. Daniel S. Wells & Elder Geo Reynolds.
On Wed, May 10, the ship with its precious cargo, sailed from Gluckstad t, & as the captain thought the colder climate would be better for the pa ssengers, he chose the route north of Scotland.with the exception of on e single day's storm the weather was very fair & favorable during the ent ire voyage. The Capitain was kind to the emigrants & the sick received go od treatment. Three meals of warm food each day were served to all. Thre e adults died on the sea & about 25 children died of measles & scarlet fe ver. Besides the Scandinavian Saints, a member of other emigrants crosse d the Atlantic on that ship. "While peace & good will reigned amoung th e Saints", writes Elder Christoffer J. Kempe, "the others, who were Luthe rans, Baptists & Methodists, lived more like cats & dogs together; some h ad disputes and engaged in fights, others played cards & swore, while som e preached, & altogether, there was a real pandiemonium."
On June 14 the ship arrived in NY harbor, & the following day the emig rants landed at Castle Garden. In the afternoon most of them continued th e journey by train & then traveled via Albany, Niagara, Detroit, Chicag o to Quincy, ILL, where they arrived on the 20th. Here they were ferrie d across the Mississippi River & spent 2 days & nights in the woods on th e Missouri side without tents or other shelter, while the rain poured dow n in torrents. They had in a hurry fixed some small huts of brush, which , however afforded them but very little shelter. The unpleasant delay wa s caused by the bridges on the railway being washed away, so the trains c ould not proceed. Finally the traveling was resumed on the 22nd, the car s conveying the company being very commonplace and dirty.. The emigrant s reached St.Joseph the following day. On 25the they started by steamboa t up the Missouri River & arrived at Wyoming, Neb., June 26th, bringing w ith them the corpses of 3 persons who had died on the steamer. Four other s had died between NY & St.Joseph.
Several of the emigrants had only paid their fare to NY & therefore ha d to remain in that city for the time being. Elder Thos Taylor, who was e migration agent for the Church, however, subsequently succeeded at a cons iderable sacrifice to complete arrangements so that all could proceed t o Wyoming. But as the Church did not send any teams to the Missouri Rive r that season to assist the poor Saints to reach Utah, & the price of oxe n was much higher than in past years, some of the emigrants had to remai n on the frontiers until the following year.
Elder Taylor arranged matters as well as he could by purchasing oxe n & loading each wagon with 1000 lbs of freight & 2000 lbs for the Saints , 3 yoke of oxen being provied for each wagon. In this way about 150 pers ons were taken across the Plains who otherwise would have been left on th e frontiers. The price of a wagon at the outfitting place that year was $ 200 in greenbacks ($100 in gold), & a yoke of average oxen cost $150. I t took about 5 weeks before everything was in order for starting the jour ney across the Plains. During this time the emigrants at Wyoming suffere d much on account of the excessive heat & a few of them died. A Danish br other, Lars Pedersen, about 30 years of age, who had assisted about 20 po or Saints to emigrate, was accidentally drowned in the Weeping Water, a s tream near Wyoming, where he, together with others, went to bathe. He wa s buried June 29th, with much expression of sorrow by the sympathizing Sa ints.
On the 31 July, most of the Scandinavian emigrants left Wyoming in a co mpany consisting of 45 ox-teams. The company was organized Aug 1st by app ointing Miner G. Atwood, capitain; Charles B. Taylor, asst captain; Ander s W. Winberg chaplain & interpreter, Johan Swenson commissary & asst to W inderg, & John Gindrup secretary. The follwoing were appointed captains o f ten: Hans C. Hogsted, H.Hansen, Christoffer J. Kempe, & John Everett. A t first traveling was slow, as the roads were bad on account of the grea t amount of rain that had fallen.
On Sep 19th the company passed Fort Laramie, & 3 days later, when stopp ing at noon for lunch & rest, & while some of the brethern were driving t he oxen to the watering places, 14 or 16 well-armed Indians suddenly spra ng forth from their ambush in the woods & tried to take the cattle, but w hen the brethern opened fire upon them & the frightened oxen ran back t o the camp, the theft was prevented. Seven of the brethern, however, wer e wounded by bullets & arrows, & a woman by the name of Grundtvig (an emi grant from Copenhagen, Den.), who was lingering some distance behind th e train, was taken captive & carried off by the Indians. Her fate has nev er become known. The wounded brethern all recovered from their wounds. So me days previous to this affray, the indians, who this year were very hos tile & had killed a number of travelers, stampeded the oxen of the compan y while grazing at night, but after 2 days search the animals were all fo und, except 3 head.
